Biology came from the Greek word bios which means life, and logia which means study of. Simply put, Biology is the science dealing with life and living organisms. For an average student, the first exploration of Biology, as a subject in school, occurs at an early age. In fact, it may not have been termed Biology but those mini-science experiments when one had as a kid, such as observing how a seed grows, how a butterfly flaps its wings, or identifying the body parts of a dog or a cat, are the earliest Biology 101 exposures.

As you age, the study becomes deeper. From watching a seed grow, come fifth grade, they will now be familiarized with photosynthesis or how plants make their own food and feed their selves. From butterfly flapping its wings to studying how from a caterpillar, it eventually evolves into a colorful butterfly. From identifying the body parts of a dog, to knowing that it is a mammal and can bear its young inside its body like a human being can. The academe has also improved in doing knowledge check by providing Biology quizzes. Some may be practical tests or application of what was thought. Some may be Biology essays asking students to explain what they have learned about a certain topics like respiratory system, mitosis, or food digestion.
